1886 Malt House features one of the industry’s most comprehensive quality control laboratories equipped with the latest testing technologies for proactive testing of incoming barley, production samples and finished malt.

A sophisticated quality control process, integrated across several steps in the malting process, will help ensure that we continually exceed industry-accepted standards for the highest quality malt.

Grain Sourcing

The process begins with 1886 Malt House diligent sourcing of and contracting with New York’s State finest barley grain producers. By investing in relationships with these expert barley farmers, 1886 Malt House not only guarantees ample supply to meet the expected increased malt demand, but also ensures that the malt they are receiving is of the highest quality.

Raw Material Sampling

The 1886 Malt House’s Quality Laboratory has the capability to test incoming grain as well as final product malt using ASBC methods and state of the art equipment. We have worked closely with the Hartwick College Center for Craft Food and Beverage to develop our methods and train our technicians, and we see the Center as a necessary resource for the craft food and beverage industry in New York State. We test our grain beginning at harvest, while its in storage, when it arrives at the plant, and at several points throughout the malting process.
